"I looked into these when they were a giveaway item here on BHO and decided to give them a go. There are 3 different sets available now, G-Licks, Kickoffs, Endings, with many more in the works. I have these 3 and am eagerly awaiting the rest.

What you get for each set is a PDF file of TAB for all (50) licks and a set of both MP3 and WAV files of each lick, played slowly. I'm really liking these a lot.

You get a bunch of good solid licks that are very usable in every day playing. Some are a bit similar and I've gone thru them picking out my favorites of each set. I've learned 2 of each set so far and am assimilating them before learning more.

Not only are the licks themselves usable, they've also give me many new ideas to work with to create my own licks. I've probably actually created 2-3 new licks for each one of these learned. These are aimed at the intermediate player and I think that's correct.

Tho these are not incredibly complex or difficult to learn, you do need to be comfortable with pulls, hammers, slides and have some right-hand facility. I suppose a beginner could make use of these but i'd say they're most useful for someone who can incorporate them into their existing bag of licks.

I'm very pleased with these and they're well worth the price hands down. I'll be using these for a long time, pulling out a new lick whenever I'm tired of the old ones. The folks at Westvon are also very wonderful people and a joy to do business with.

Disclaimer: I have no financial interest in this product...
just passing along my thoughts on a great deal."

Do you want to play the kind of licks the pros play? Then you’ll want to take a look at Hot Banjo Licks. With Hot Banjo Licks you’ll be able to learn everything from funky licks, kick-offs, banjo ending licks, minor licks, and standard G licks. Hot Banjo Licks covers all the standard Scruggs style licks and will give you more ammunition for your banjo ammo box.
Ever wonder where players like J. D. Crowe, Sonny Osborne, Bill Emerson, Alan Munde, Allen Shelton, Don Reno, Jim Mills, Sammy Shelor, Ron Stewart, Ron Block, and Terry Baucom learned the hot banjo licks they all play? They started with learning the style and phrasing of Earl Scruggs, then they worked on adapting his licks to their own feel and style. Hot Banjo Licks attempts to capture this very approach to learning to play the hot licks of the banjo masters.

If you talk to players like J. D. Crowe and Jim Mills, you’ll hear them say to always focus your attention on the melody. Not just these players, but most all of the pros will tell you that you need to play your banjo licks in such a way that you do not step all over the lead singer, or your fellow band members. Hot Banjo Licks Back-up licks will give you licks and techniques to use in your back-up playing.

The banjo used to record all the licks for the Hot Banjo Licks series is a Huber Lancaster model. The Huber banjo has the thump and tone that sounds close to the old pre-war Gibson banjos. A number of professional banjo players today play Huber banjos including Ron Block, Sammy Shelor, Jim Mills, Barry Abernathy, Jason Burleson, Cia Cherryholmes, Greg Cahill, and Dale Perry.

Have you ever been in a jam session and it came your time to play a break, and you felt like you lost control and blew it? It happens to all of us for sure but you can over come this problem. If we try too hard to play hot banjo licks, often we blow it because our ego takes over and we forget from which dimension we are really playing the music. Ron Block, a master of hot banjo licks in his owe right, speaks to this a great deal and always likes to encourage players to stop thinking to hard about what they are going to play, and just play from the heart with feel.

How often have tried to play a lick and it did not fit the song? Much of this is merely trial by error, but a great deal more of it is a lack of Banjo lick vocabulary. Hot Banjo Licks will give you more material you can use at any jam or on stage right at the appropriate moment.
