They started with learning the style and phrasing of Earl Scruggs, then they worked on adapting his licks to their own feel and style. Hot Banjo Licks attempts to capture this very approach to learning to play the hot licks of the banjo masters.

If we try too hard to play hot banjo licks, often we blow it because our ego takes over and we forget from which dimension we are really playing the music. Ron Block, a master of hot banjo licks in his owe right, speaks to this a great deal and always likes to encourage players to stop thinking to hard about what they are going to play, and just play from the heart with feel.
